Petra Lang

Frankfurt born Petra Lang studied voice with Gertie Charlent and Ingrid Bjoner after graduating as a violinist. She later joined the opera studio of the Bavarian State Opera and then quickly established herself with the major international opera companies. Early in her career she turned to the music of Richard Wagner and became one of the most sought-after singers in this highly in demand repertoire.

After having been one of the leading dramatic mezzos in the world for many years singing roles such as Wagner’s Brangäne, Kundry, Venus, Sieglinde, Ortrud, Adriano, Bartok’s Judith, Berg’s Marie, Berlioz’ Cassandre and Strauss’ Ariadne she changed repertoire in 2012 to become an equally successful dramatic soprano.
She celebrated her international break-through as Brünnhilde in the new Ring Cycle production of Dieter Dorn at the Grand Théâtre de Genève (2013/2014) and since repeated this success at numerous occasions including in Budapest, Dortmund and at the Munich and Vienna State Opera.

In the summer of 2016 she gave her acclaimed role debut as Isolde in Katharina Wagner’s production of Tristan und Isolde at the Bayreuth Festival under the baton of Christian Thielemann. Since then, she sang the part also at the Munich and Vienna State Opera and returns to Bayreuth as Isolde in 2017. Ms. Lang is a frequent guest at the prestigious Bayreuth Festival where she sang Ortrud in Hans Neuenfels’ Lohengrin production in 2011 and from 2013 to 2015 as well as Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde in 2005/2006.

In addition to her operatic career, Petra Lang is an exquisite concert singer and recitalist performing with the major international orchestras, conductors and pianists including Claudio Abbado, Gerd Albrecht, Pierre Boulez, Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Chailly, M.W. Chung, Andrew Davis, Colin Davis, Christoph von Dohnany, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Adam Fischer, Ivan Fischer, Bernhard Haitink, Daniel Harding,  Eliahu Inbal, Marek Janowski, Armin Jordan, Philippe Jordan, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Ingo Metzmacher, Riccardo Muti, Kent Nagano, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jonathan Nott, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Leif Segerstam, Simon Rattle,  Donald Runnicles,  Peter Schneider, Jeffrey Tate, Christian Thielemann, Silvio Varviso and Simone Young.

She gave recitals in Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Brussels, Darmstadt, Dortmund, Dresden (Semperoper), Edinburg, Feldkirch (Schubertiade), Geneva (Victoria Hall, Grand Théâtre), Gent, London (Wigmore Hall), Milan (La Scala), Mainz, Munich, New York (Carnegie-Weill-Hall), Paris and Wiesbaden with pianists such as Adrian Baianu, Malcolm Martineau, Carmen Piazzini, Maurizio Pollini, Wolfram Rieger, Charles Spencer and Einar Steen-Nøkleberg. In 2008 Oehms Classics released „Songs by Great Conductors“.

Petra Lang is also part of the 2009 release of Wagner’s Lohengrin with the WDR Orchestra under Semyon Bychkov. In 2002 she won two Grammy Awards for her interpretation of Cassandra as part of the London Symphony's live recording of Berlioz' Les Troyens conducted by Sir Colin Davis. The album won the categories Best Classical and Best Opera Recording of the Year. In May 2002, it also won two of the highly respected BRIT Awards in London making it one of the best selling recordings of the year as well as the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplatten Kritik” and the “Orphée d'or de l'Academie du disque lyrique” in France.

Ms. Lang supports young singers in international master classes.
